Get started
Start Jazz Jackrabbit with OpenJazz
Install a desktop build and give it your first-game files or original shareware data.
Project detailsWhat you need
Extract the files from your owned original Jazz Jackrabbit edition or its original shareware release. Keep them in one folder. Shareware has limited episodes; this guide is for the first game, not Jazz Jackrabbit 2.
Your first launch
Choose a desktop build
Windows: download openjazz-windows-mingw-x86_64.zip from release 20260301 and extract all files. Mac: get the signed Universal 2 app from Mac Source Ports. Linux: the release ZIP targets x86-64 with glibc 2.35. The openjazz-20260301.zip source archive is not a ready-to-run app.
Place or select the original data
Windows: place the extracted engine files in the original game folder, or drag the game-data folder onto OpenJazz.exe. For the Mac Source Ports app, place the data in ~/Library/Application Support/OpenJazz. On Linux, data alongside the executable is a fallback; you can also pass the game directory as a command-line argument.
Launch and check your controls
Run OpenJazz.exe or the Mac app; on Linux, launch OpenJazz with your game-data directory if needed. Open Setup Options to check key bindings. If data is not found, confirm that the directory contains extracted first-game files rather than a ZIP, installer or Jazz 2 data.
Before you continue
Documentation checked on 2026-10-19; RemakeList has not installed or played the game. The free engine does not include the full commercial game. The Mac package is a separate distributor build; Linux needs a compatible x86-64 system and glibc version.
